Child/Youth Trauma Specialist

James House is the only accredited nonprofit organization helping people affected by sexual violence, domestic violence, and stalking in the Greater Tri-Cities Region.

This includes the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and Petersburg, and the counties of Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Prince George, Surry, Sussex, including Fort Gregg-Adamms. All of our services are trauma-informed, cost-free, confidential, and available in both English and Spanish. We are governed by a Board of Directors who believe in our mission.

Our mission is to provide support, advocacy, and education for people in the Tri-Cities area of Virginia affected by sexual violence, domestic violence, and stalking and to empower them to become healthy, safe, and self-sufficient.

 

The Child/Youth Trauma Specialist will provide trauma sensitive advocacy services for children and youth impacted
by domestic violence, sexual violence, and other interpersonal abuse and trauma. (comprising 90% of work time).
Responsibilities include:
● Exhibit congruence between the mission and values of James House and interactions with the
community/clients.
● Thoroughly understand and abide by James House’s policies and correctly implement all procedures.
● Protect client confidentiality, following protocols to obtain signed informed consent forms for release of
information.
● Respond quickly and appropriately to hotline calls from survivors, family members and friends, and other
service providers.
● Meet with children/youth within 72 hours of entering shelter and create an age-appropriate safety plan.
● Provide counseling and case management services as deemed appropriate for the child’s age.
● Facilitate age-appropriate support groups and group activities.
● Facilitate activities that promote parent/child bonding.
● Complete regular client documentation and required reports regarding client cases and ensure collection of
outcome related data is maintained accurately and in alignment with the schedule for reporting to funders.
● Work collaboratively with other team members to effectively meet the needs of clients, when necessary.
● Attend meetings, training sessions, and supervision as required.
● Provide crisis intervention for children and adults during and after hours to include hotline, walk-ins,
caseload clients, etc.
● Serve on committees pertaining to domestic and/or sexual violence or other mission driven initiatives
(MDTs, taskforces, etc.) as required.
● Assist with maintaining and/or building collaborations or community partnerships.
In order to actively promote James House’s mission, the Child/Youth Trauma Specialist will support the following
activities: (comprising 10% of time)
● Conduct basic administrative/maintenance tasks to contribute to smooth functioning of office operations.
● Advocate for key policy issues.
● Housekeeping.
● Occasional duties in support of the team.
Requirements:
● Degree in social work, psychology, or related counseling field preferred.
● Vast experience and training in trauma informed care of child victims of violence.
● Experience with crisis intervention.
● Ability to maintain a compassionate and professional approach while working with people in crisis situations,
who are of diverse ethnic, religious, national, educational, language, sexual orientation, cultural, and class
backgrounds.
● Bilingual Spanish – English preferred.
● Excellent writing, public speaking, communication, and interpersonal skills.
● Excellent organizational and time management skills.
● Strong computer skills, experience with Google tools, and Microsoft products.
● Knowledge of the Tri-Cities and surrounding counties, reliable transportation, a valid VA state driver’s
license, and in force automobile insurance.
● Successful background check.
