The Lifespan project of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center presents: Providing Trauma-Informed Care to Sexual Violence Survivors in Later Life, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 2:30-4:00 pm Presented by Holly Ramsey-Klawsnik, PhD, Nanci Newton, MFA, and Karla Vierthaler, MPA. This free webinar will address the ways in which the normal aging process, societal views and cultural norms affect the way we work with sexual assault survivors in later life. During the training you will hear about new research, ways to apply it to your daily practice, and proven skills and resources that will benefit both local centers and state coalitions. Expressions; The Art of Surviving

The Art of Surviving is an exhibit of two-dimensional art (e.g. paintings, charcoals, drawings, poetry, collages), created by survivors of sexual violence across Virginia. The exhibit is comprised of approximately 30 pieces of artwork and 10 poems, each with a written narrative submitted by the artist/poet that describes how her/his piece relates to surviving sexual violence. Join us Friday, April 13 at the Petersburg Regional Art Center, Mezzanine Gallery. Tickets go on sale in March 2012, sponsorships are currently available. Check back for details.

Miss Representation

The documentary Miss Representation, by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The film explores how the media’s misrepresentations of women have led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. The Daughters of Penelope and The Appomattox Regional Library System will host this powerful film on March 29 at 7 pm at The Beacon Theatre, Hopewell. Check back for details.

White Ribbon Campaign

The White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) is the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women (VAW). In over fifty-five countries, campaigns are led by both men and women, even though the focus is on educating men and boys. In some countries it is a general public education effort focused on ending violence against women. TJH collected over 240 signatures from Latino males who pledged that they would never commit, condone, or remain silent about men's violence against women during this past event held on July 16 at the Feria de la Oportunidad in Richmond.

A group of marketing students from Virginia State University collected donations for The James House. Their group, called “Giving Life a Makeover” (GLAM) decided to collect the donations in an effort to help women and children who have been affected by domestic violence.
